Restoring a log cabin in winter weather can seem like a daunting task, but with the right steps and preparations, it’s entirely possible amidst the snow and cold.
The initial step towards a successful log cabin restoration during the winter months involves thorough preparation of the structure itself. We begin with a detailed examination of the cabin’s exterior, focusing on identifying any areas of concern such as rotting wood, evidence of insect infestations, or significant cracks that could compromise the cabin’s integrity. It’s essential to remove snow, ice, and any accumulated debris from around the cabin to ensure unrestricted access to all parts of the structure. This clearance facilitates easier movement around the site.
To effectively shield our work area from winter’s unpredictable weather, we set up a tarp—a crucial step in the process. We begin by accurately measuring the space to cover to ensure the tarp completely encompasses the targeted area, plus additional margin for secure fastening. We use durable, waterproof tarps that can withstand the weight of snow accumulation and the force of winter winds.
Elevating the tarp above the work area to prevent accumulation of snow or water, which could potentially weigh down or compromise the sheltered space. Using the cabin’s fascia can help maintain the necessary height and slope for efficient runoff. Affixing the tarp carefully, checking for any sagging sections or gaps will eliminate most of the moisture and cold air.
Fastening the tarp to the fascia or other structural elements should be done with care to avoid damage to the wood. Nails can be used in this process, because with finishing touches such as caulk, stain, and clear coat will make everything seamless.
Finally, we install a heater that has the sufficient capacity to evenly distribute warmth across the entire covered area. Forced Air propane heater. Then we create a ventilation system at this point. It is important for even circulation so the stain can cure correctly.
The weather may be bad, but we don’t let it stop us in our goal to restore and maintain your home.
