Reviving a Cabin; Maintenance Program

This lovely home in Banner Elk, North Carolina was in need of some freshening up and rot removal. Media Blasting on this cabin was the perfect solution to getting through the old, thick stain and clear coat to the natural wood. Our methods of sandblasting involve traditional sand or corn-blasting. Not only does this process bring life back to a cabin, but it also allows you to take a closer look at the wood and prepare it for refinishing.

For example, after sandblasting this side of the cabin, we discovered a large check that had started just beneath a window. After time it collected water, causing rot. We blasted, sanded, and sealed up the check until it looked good as new.

Sand blasting was an important process even though this cabin just needed some maintenance and freshening up. In certain areas, there was noticeable UV damage where the stain started to flake. After blasting all the gunk off, the fresh coat of stain looked slightly lighter. With the cabin nicely brightened up, we clear coated and gave it a proper seal.

Sandblasting can help identify any underlying issues with your cabin. As the old layers are removed, any damage or checks in the wood can become more apparent. This allows you to address these issues before refinishing, ensuring that your cabin is properly sealed and protected against potential problems in the future. Below are some great benefits from Sandblasting:

  1. Effective removal of old coatings: Sandblasting is a powerful method for stripping away old stain and clear coat from the exterior of your cabin. In this case, that was very important. Mainly, we wanted to Media-blast this cabin for all of the UV damage that had occurred. It caused the stain to flake and it really just needed to be stripped away.
  2. Restoration of natural beauty: One of the main benefits of sandblasting is its ability to reveal the natural beauty of the wood underneath. By removing the old coatings, the unique grain patterns and textures of the wood are exposed, bringing new life and character to your cabin.
  3. Protection against environmental factors: Sandblasting also provides important protection against damaging environmental factors. By removing old coatings, you create a clean surface that can be properly sealed with new finishes. This helps to prevent moisture penetration, UV damage, and other wear and tear, effectively prolonging the lifespan of your cabin.

So even though this cabin didn’t need any extreme makeover, it was very important to blast through those old coats to the bare wood so we could penetrate it with fresh stain and seal up any checks, chink lines, and anywhere else water damage could take place.
